If you’re looking for some granny square inspiration, then this cosy, colourful Mellow Granny Square Blanket could be your next project! Read on for the 'recipe' - all you need to know is how to make a granny square.

Where to start?

I wanted to stash bust my aran weight yarn, and try some of the colours that I wouldn’t usually put together.  I tried a few combinations by placing the skeins next to each other, and then once I had decided what I liked, I added a deeper colour for some contrast. I decided I wanted to make lots of small squares, just 2 rounds.  I usually use a neutral shade to join, but wanted to try something different, so I decided to use a neutral shade for the 2nd round of all the squares, and a different colour to join them all.  I had lots of skeins of the Mushroom yarn in my stash so that helped make up my mind!

Yarn:

Paintbox Yarn Simply Aran (acrylic) 100g skein:

  • 1 x Vintage Pink

  • 1 x Pistachio

  • 1 x Melon Sorbet (unfortunately this colour is discontinued)

  • 1 x Mustard

  • 1 x Dusty Lilac (the deeper shade for contrast)

  • 2 x Vanilla Cream (the neutral shade for round 2 of each square)

Stylecraft Special Aran (acrylic) 100g skein:

  • 4 x Mushroom

Hook: 5mm

Granny Squares:

  • 64 x squares

  • Each square has 2 rounds

  • Centre round is a colour, and 2nd round is vanilla cream for all squares

I decided I wanted diagonal lines of the same centre colour, so quantities of squares needed were as follows:

  • 12 x Vintage Pink

  • 14 x Pistachio

  • 13 x Melon Sorbet

  • 13 x Mustard

  • 12 x Dusty Lilac

Joining Method:

  • Continuous Join As You Go

  • Squares were placed in lines of diagonal colour (see photo)

  • 8 x 8 squares

***You can find lots of brilliant tutorials for ‘Continuous Join As You Go’ by other makers on YouTube if you search. (Please note this method is different to ‘Join As You Go’ where you join each square together as you are making them.)***

Once I had joined all the squares I continued with granny cluster stitches:

  • 2 x rounds – mushroom

  • 1 x round – vanilla cream

  • 1 x round - mushroom

Border:

You know I LOVE a big colourful border! I suppose you could say this portion is really still the main blanket rather than border but anyway, we are calling it the border!

Continuing using the granny cluster stitches:

  • 15 x rounds – alternate 2 x rounds of a colour then 1 x round of mushroom

  • 1 x round – vanilla cream

  • 2 x rounds – mushroom

  • 1 x round – Double Crochet (UK Terms) or Single Crochet (US Terms)

  • 1 x round – Bobble Edging – try Attic 24s version here

My blanket came out approx. 48 x 48 inches. It's aran weight yarn (4) so very warm and squishy.

You could make this blanket in any yarn brand or weight, just adjust your hook size and yarn quantities accordingly, and note the finished size will be different to mine.

Hopefully this has inspired you to make your own Mellow Granny!  I’d love to see your makes, tag me on Instagram @harrietsduck and use the hashtag #mellowgrannysquare
