August Haze Sunburst Granny Square Blanket

The weather here in the UK may be turning autumnal now, but last month the August sunshine called for a pretty sunburst blanket, and I had just the yarn in mind! Read on for the recipe so you can make one too.....

As much as I love the warm, sunny weather, it can make crocheting a challenge over the summer months; having a heavy blanket on your lap or thick yarn on your hook isn't enjoyable! Earlier this year, I purchased a few skeins of the gorgeous Yarnsmith's Pebble Haze Prints DK yarn from Wool Warehouse, and the cotton/acrylic mix makes it a more comfortable yarn to use in the warmer weather.
One of the shades I bought is called 'Sidmouth' which is a mix of pinks and purples. I decided to go with a light cream background so I used Yarnsmith's Create DK in 'Off-White', which I think works perfectly and shows off the colours in the variegated yarn.
I've written up the 'recipe' for my blanket below - I say 'recipe' because it's not a full written pattern, but gives you all the guidance you need to make one of your own.
To make this blanket you will need to know (or learn):
Basic crochet stitches
How to crochet granny squares and sunburst granny squares
How to use Continuous Join As You Go Method
Yarn:
Yarnsmith's Pebble Haze Prints DK in shade 'Sidmouth' - 2 x 150g balls
Yarnsmith's Create DK in shade 'Off-White' - 4 x 100g balls
Hook:
4mm (G/6 size in US)
Finished size:
My finished blanket measured approx. 40 x 40 inches.

Squares:
Make 33 sunburst granny squares in total – 20 with a cream centre (Square A), and 13 with a variegated centre (Square B) as per below:
Square A colour order:
Round 1: cream
Round 2: Sidmouth
Round 3: cream
Round 4 (squaring off): Sidmouth
Square B colour order:
Round 1: Sidmouth
Round 2: cream
Round 3: Sidmouth
Round 4 (squaring off): cream
Layout and Joining Method:
Place 1 x Square B in the middle, and 8 x Square A around it in a 3x3 format, and join them together with cream using the Continuous Join As You Go method.
Once joined, continue working rounds of granny clusters all the way around in the following order: 2 x rounds in cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 3 x cream.
Attach the remaining squares around the sides using the Continuous Join As You Go method, alternating squares A and B as per the photos below. NOTE: in order to now join the squares using CJAYG you'll need 30 granny clusters on each side of your blanket after completing the previous round. I used the same method to attach mini squares onto my Diamond Of The Season Blanket, so pop along to that blog post and take a look through the photo guidance, if you are unsure of how to start.
Once joined, continue working rounds of granny clusters all the way around in the following order: 2 x rounds in cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 1 x cream, 1 x Sidmouth, 3 x cream.
Add the bobble edging (see border section below) and you are all done!
NOTE: You can find lots of brilliant tutorials for ‘Continuous Join As You Go’ by other makers on YouTube if you search. (Please note this method is different to ‘Join As You Go’ where you join each square together as you are making them.)
Border:

I edged the blanket in my favourite bobble border. It looks so effective in the variegated yarn!
Firstly, with the right (front) side of the blanket facing you and using Sidmouth, crochet a double crochet (single crochet in US terms) in each stitch around, working 3 double crochet in each of the corners. Turn over your work, and on the wrong side crochet a round of bobbles (so they pop out on the right side), including the corners.
To work a bobble:
*Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull a loop through, yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook; repeat from * three more times until you have 5 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.
Slip stitch tightly into the next stitch to fix the bobble into place.
You could make this blanket in any yarn brand or weight, just adjust your hook size and yarn quantities accordingly, and note the finished size will be different.
Hopefully this has inspired you to make your own August Haze Sunburst Blanket! I’d love to see your makes, tag me on Instagram @harrietsduck and use the hashtag #augusthazeblanket
